In the summer of 2009’s weather extremes, in fact, roughly three out of every four gardeners surveyed nationwide said Flower Carpet® Next Generation easy-care roses performed better than other rose varieties. And of those who grew only Flower Carpet roses, two out of three noted the brand out-performed their other shrubs and perennials.

Flower Carpet Rose - Amber“I’ve spent thousands on the plants in my yard, but everyone asks me about my Carpet roses,” says Vincent Johns of West Virginia, one of 45 members of the National Home Gardening Club taking part in the survey (the group is known for its objective home testing of gardening products).

Johns experienced a very wet summer this year – and he wasn’t the only one noticing the wacky weather. All respondents in the Northeast reported excess rain and coolness, while between 50 and 100 percent of respondents in the six other zones reporting extremes at both ends of the spectrum (excess rain/coolness and dryness/heat.

Testers put all three colors in the Next Generation line – Pink Supreme, Scarlet and Amber – through their rigorous paces in 37 states located in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 11.

In addition to the overwhelming majority of respondents reporting Flower Carpet’s better performance compared with other roses, shrubs and perennials, 82 percent also reported no pest problems. A significant number (80 percent) also said they would recommend all three colors in Flower Carpet’s Next Generation series to their friends

“I definitely would recommend Flower Carpet roses to my friends, “ said Jackie Wilcox, a home garden tester from South Dakota. “They’re easy to take care of, they look great and they establish themselves very fast for the most part. As for a favorite color, I’m partial to the Scarlet. I love the color against the dark, shiny, green leaves!”

It’s not too late to plant

On May 22nd, 2011 RachelS317 says:

It’s not too late to plant roses is it? I am going to re-landscape the garden in my back yard and was going to include a couple. I have a couple dump trailers of dirt and mulch coming next weekend and I am going to start then.

Thanks!

Hi, and thanks so much for visiting Your Easy Garden! You can go ahead and plant now, or you can even wait another month. If there's a legitimate concern about the plant freezing in the cold weather, I'd give it 2 to 3 inches of mulch the first winter. Hope that helps, and good luck!

I live in Zone 9 in South Texas and it’s hot as blazes right now. We will cool down some by mid to late Sept. Could I plant Flower Carpet roses then or do I have to wait until Spring. Our first freeze won’t hit until Dec. - would that give them enough time to get established?

Thank you so much for visiting Your Easy Garden! Hmmm…Flower Carpet roses’ performance in indoor flower arrangements? That’s something I’d love to check out for myself! I just planted a bunch of Flower Carpet roses in my back yard and will have to cut some blooms this summer to see how they hold up indoors! Thanks again for the post!

They do look amazing but as far as I know flower carpet roses are more fit in landscaping than in indoor flower arrangements. If I had a garden with these flowers I would never ever have a bad day, just by looking at them I think I would cheer up in a matter of seconds.

Thanks so much for contributing to this discussion - yes, I’ve heard the same thing from so many Flower Carpet fans! Am curious to know which color(s) Flower Carpet roses you’ve grown, what zone or general climate you’re in and how the roses have done. Also, since I just moved to a new home in November and have a completely new blank slate for a garden, I’m looking for all the design ideas people have for designing with Flower Carpet (I plan to at least put in some Next Generation Amber and Scarlet this year)! But I’m open to other colors as well. Any good colors and companion plants or color combinations anyone can suggest for me to try? I’m all ears!

Hi Hellen,

Thanks for writing in! You might want to try one of the Flower Carpet Next Generation roses - Amber, Pink Supreme or Scarlet. The Next Generation roses have an addition 15 years’ worth of breeding behind them for even better heat and humidity tolerance. Amber is an especially great bet, since it just won the All-Deutschland Rose designation (the world’s highest honor for disease resistance). All three Next Generation colors, by the way, outperformed three out of four home testers’ other roses, shrubs and perennials in a nationwide survey last summer, and were the top-performing roses between 2006 and 2009 in trials at Cornell University. Can’t beat that! I’ll be growing them in my yard this spring, too!

My mother used to have a wonderful garden, she still has it, but now it’s smaller than it was few years ago, when i was closer to home and was able to help her taking care of it. I intend to build my own garden this year and since roses are my favorite flowers i am going to plant lots of rose bushes. I must say i was a little worried knowing they are such fragile plants so i am grateful to find out which variety is the strongest.

I've been growing Flower Carpet...

On January 11th, 2010 Lisa says:

Got the same situation going on here in western New York - can’t remember the last time we had this much snow! But I always say a good, insulating snow cover is better for the plants than the dry, frigid air sapping all the moisture away from their leaves…

As I mentioned in a previous post, I just moved to a new home and have been itching for the spring to get here so I can plant some Flower Carpet roses along our front drive… Good to know that I can put them there without the salt spray killing them!

Question here: the house we moved to is sort of a wedgewood blue (not my first choice, but it’ll probably stay) - what color Flower Carpet roses do you think would go best with blue?

I’ve been growing Flower

On January 11th, 2010 Anonymous says:

I’ve been growing Flower Carpet roses here in Vermont for about 12 years and have been amazed at how well they perform - even after being buried in snow for months on end. We live on a hill that’s frequently salted and sanded, and as a result end up with loads of road salt being thrown up onto our Appleblossom and Pink Flower Carpets all winter long, yet it’s never seemed to harm the plants. They just come back stronger each year.

We just got slammed with another 30 inches and my Flower Carpet Ambers and Scarlets are totally buried, so it will be interesting to see how they do this year.
