Personal Information
- Biography
Lisa Hutchurson, who writes this blog on behalf of Tesselaar Plants, lives and gardens in Rochester, NY, where she worked for seven years as a garden writer for the Democrat and Chronicle, a Gannett newspaper. A 1994 graduate of Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, she completed her master gardener training in 2001.
Gardening, you could say, is in her blood. Her Canadian great-grandparents ran Whorley Greenhouses in Haileybury, Ontario from the 1920s to the 1970s, and that affinity for gardening was then passed all the way down to her father, who was always sprouting something on the windowsill or getting visits from the FBI after ordering lilacs from Iraq (true story!)
For Lisa, gardening has always been a passion—and a challenge. When she was single and bouncing around from apartment to apartment as a journalist, the problem was primarily too little money (space was also an issue, but she always somehow convinced her landlord to let her put in a garden or landscape around the house as a “property improvement”). Now that she has a husband and a toddler in addition to her freelance writing job, the issue is almost always too little time. That’s where Anthony Tesselaar’s beautiful, easy-care plants come in. The idea, friends, is to garden smarter—not harder.
So join Lisa for some “get real” gardening—having a life, and a garden, too! Post your pics. Share your stories. Tell us how you juggle it all. And of course, look for lots of easy-gardening ideas, how-to helps and expert advice—all from a community that’s right there with you!
